Cross country skiing has a long history of being an important part of the culture in Jackson, New Hampshire. It has even been incorporated into the Jackson Grammar school as a regular part of the curriculum promoting fitness and health. Jackson Ski Touring offers free cross country skiing as a part of the Physical Education Curriculum for grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. Once a week starting in January, students walk from the school to the Jackson Touring Center to cross country ski for an hour with the Physical Education teacher, to increase outdoor comfort, and to promote fitness and health for novice to advanced skiers. Introducing cross country skiing into children’s lives has been an effective way to encourage a “heart healthy” way to stay fit. Each year, February has been designated as National Heart Month by the American Heart Association. With this in mind, Jackson Ski Touring and the village inns have committed to donating a portion of the proceeds from the “Hearts of Jackson” Inn Tour to the American Heart Association.
Sign-up for the Hearts of Jackson Tour will be limited to 150 people, reservations are recommended. A trail pass is required for those who are skiing or snowshoeing, and again registration for the tour will be at the Jackson Ski Touring Base Lodge that day. The cost of the tour is $25 per person which also includes a trail pass, and a small commemorative gift fro the first 50 people who sign up.
